"About a Boy" features Hugh Grant as Will, a 40ish man who has no responsibility and does not want any. He lives off the royalties of a Christmas song his father wrote years ago. After dating a single mom, he decides that they are the future of dating. To meet single mothers, he joins S.P.A.T. (Single Parents Alone Together), a single parent support group, by pretending that he has a two year old son. Through the group, he meets Marcus Brewer, a dorky preteen who does not fit in at his new school and is struggling with his mother's battle with depression.
