FBI agents surround a house where a serial killer is holding a woman hostage. They make their move and it all goes terribly wrong. But it isn’t the real thing, just a training exercise for the Mindhunters, the unit that tracks down serial killers. The agents are trainees and their next exercise will take place on remote Oneiga Island off the Virginia coast in a deserted Navy Seal training post. Instructor John Harris (Val Kilmer) leads the group of seven, including Vince Sherman (Clifton Collins Jr.), J. D. Reston (Christian Slater) and Sara Moore (Kathryn Morris) plus police detective Gabe Jenkins (LL Cool J) in a pretend assignment to track down an invented killer known as “The Puppeteer.” Very quickly things start to go wrong as first Harris is killed by a trap, and then others follow one by one. The survivors realize that one of them is a serial killer who has set elaborate traps for each person based on their own psychological profile. The trainees must figure out who among their number is a murderous psychopath and stop the insanity before it goes too far.
