After art gallery owner Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) meets George (Alessandro Nivola) at an auction, the two start a whirlwind affair which eventually results in marriage. Despite this, Madeleine knows almost nothing about the family of her new husband. When the two travel to North Carolina to meet up with an eccentric artist whom she is pursuing for the gallery, she finally gets the opportunity to visit with George's family members who happen to live nearby. At George's family home, tensions run high and things are generally uneasy with the Johnsten family. His parents seem to have a rift growing between them, while his live-at-home brother is resentful of his success. The only one who welcomes them to the home is his sister-in-law, Ashley (Amy Adams), who is very pregnant, very talkative, and yet quite naive. As Madeleine attempts to woo the local painter, she also struggles with her new in-laws, trying desperately to strike the correct balance.
