In 1961 Don Haskins (Josh Lucas) was hired by Texas Western College to coach their basketball team. Greatness was not expected, and there was not much to the job as he had to live in the dorms with the team. But Haskins was determined to make a great team, and he wasn't afraid to go against the grain to do so. After realizing that one of the only ways to get a good team is to go after guys that other teams won't, he heads out to recruit several African American players. By the 1966 season he has assembled a group of promising players, most of them African American. Bobby Joe Hill (Derek Luke) is the star of the team along with several other African American players, and with Haskins strong coaching they are soon rising to the top of the college basketball world. The only question remaining for Coach Haskins and his players is whether or not they can overcome the prejudice and the anger that they face on the road to glory.
