Katherine Thorn(Julia Stiles) while stationed overseas with her husband Liev Schreiber(Robert Thorn); an american ambassador, gives birth. The baby appears to die after the birth, and because of the fragile state of Katherine Liev is convinced by a priest to replace his deceased baby with that of another whose mother died during childbirth. Katherine and Liev raise there child as there own with only Liev knowing the secret. Their new son Damien calls into question Katherine's sanity as strange things begin happening, including suicide, murder, accidental deaths, and plain old childish tantrums. Are they raising the son of satan?
