As the President of the United States' daughter, Samantha Mackenzie (Katie Holmes) has had her independence and social life curtailed as a result of her father's position. Secret Service agents, who are perceived as nothing more than a nuisance, constantly shadow her everywhere she goes. Finally, she reaches the age where she has the opportunity to go away to college and leave the White House behind. She is able to convince her parents to allow her to attend a school in California, and is also able to negotiate reduced Secret Service protection, in an effort to at least pretend to have a normal school experience. While away at school, she bonds with her roommate, Mia Thompson (Ameria), and generally has a good time. She also hits it off with the attractive resident advisor (RA) at her dorm, James Lansome (Marc Blucas). The two become romantically involved, but there seems to be more to James than is initially revealed. After a fallout between the two and resentment over her father's interference in her life, Samantha comes an understanding and returns home to support her family during her father's re-election bid.
