When a mentally challenged young black man named Robert James Kennedy (Cuba Gooding Jr.) walks by the practice field at T. L. Hanna high school one day all the boys ridicule him. Coach Harold Jones (Ed Harris) does not approve of the boys' mocking and punishes them for it. The young man eventually becomes Radio to the players and the coach because he always has a radio with him. Eventually Radio ends up as a regular on the practice field and at the games for T. L. Hanna high, but not everyone approves. Some of the boys on the team and others in the town continue to mistreat and take advantage of him, but despite all of the trials that Radio receives at the hands of some, others take him up and love him. When Radio becomes an inspiration to the team he changes the perspective of an entire town who eventually embrace him.
